I got an outboard

March 17, 2015Matt Leave a comment

Sometimes the universe just comes together. The day after talking to Boat neighbours Joss and Matt about dinghies, a porta-bote finally shows up on craigslist. The day after that, Joss brings me an outboard! It’s apparently barely functional but the… Continue reading →

Planning for an electric engine conversion

November 27, 2014Matt Leave a comment

One of the dreams of mine is to replace the diesel engine with an electric one. Electric engines are amazing and provide far more torque at low speed, are a lot more reliable and are quiet/non-polluting. There is one big… Continue reading →

Engine bits and bobs

September 15, 2014Matt Leave a comment

Being a quiet Sunday, I decided to do some miscellaneous bits and pieces on the engine I’d been putting off. First off was to rewire the alternator. This is the original wiring   As you can see, the output from the… Continue reading →

August 20, 2014Matt Leave a comment

The last thing to do here was change the oil, and change the 3 filters – primary filter, secondary filter and the oil filter. First was the Primary filter – this is a rancor filter and first in line in… Continue reading →

Engine Refresh Part 1 – Heat Exchanger

August 18, 2014Matt Leave a comment

First thing to do was to move the heat away from it’s old position – IE above the batteries. In this position, if it vented coolant, it would vent right onto the batteries, which would not be a particularly great thing… Continue reading →

Raw water system fixin’

March 15, 2014Matt 2 Comments

As seen in my last post, Windchime wasn’t going anywhere without fixing the cooling system. I had established that water was running through the system ok, so I crossed my fingers and waited for the pump to be returned to… Continue reading →

*still not moving As an update to my last post, here is a diagram of the front of the engine – I have drawn a box around where the seawater pump was (this is post removal)   And this is… Continue reading →

Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!

The hardest parts are yet to come but after two and a half years, I'm homeward bound.
