July 14, 2014Matt Leave a comment

Bilge pump system redesign – part 1

July 13, 2014Matt Leave a comment

So the boat when I bought it had just one bilge pump, a lil 500GPM one with a float switch   A few problems with this – 500GPM is a not very power bilge pump at all, and won’t be… Continue reading →

Troubleshooting a light

July 10, 2014Matt Leave a comment

So a bedside light doesn’t work, and hasn’t since I got the boat. Hmm, what could be wrong? I finally had a bit of time to investigate.   Lets unscrew the middle and have a look! Oh… that can’t be… Continue reading →

July 1, 2014Matt Leave a comment

Finally the last thing to do was hook up all the circuits to the panel. Rather then add yet more endless pictures of wires and circuits, I’ll just have one – the little bus bar I ran all the lights… Continue reading →

Install the DC System Part 3 – Hooking up the multimeter

July 1, 2014Matt Leave a comment

The next stage was to get the integrated multimeter working. This required running 4 separate wires back to the batteries/shunt from the panel – which was annoying. Even more annoying was that 2 of them had to be twisted together the… Continue reading →

Fusing the batteries

June 29, 2014Matt Leave a comment

One thing that needed to be done was install a fuse within 7 inches of the battery. I decided to use a Marine Rated Battery Fuse (MRBF) with a 200amp fuse – it was a bit higher than the 100amp… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
