First multi-day trip

July 8, 2015Matt Leave a comment

So last weekend I went on my first multi-day trip! And didn’t die! All photos are from my mobile phone because I forgot to charge my fancy camera’s battery before we left. Oops. We took this route   There was… Continue reading →

I suck at salmon fishing

June 29, 2015Matt Leave a comment

It’s true – this weekend I hooked FIVE salmon and only got one in the boat, and that one was tiny so I just lifted it in. That makes 6 salmon in total hooked and 1 boated, meaning I’m batting… Continue reading →

Trip to Orcas

June 23, 2015Matt 7 Comments

So after all my hubris in my last post, I did not actually sail over. My ankle is still pretty bad, and for a solo trip it just seemed like a big ol’ bad idea. And I’ve had a few… Continue reading →

Planning for my first international trip

June 18, 2015Matt Leave a comment

‘International Trip’. It sounds so grand doesn’t it?! As it turns out, it’s just a short jaunt across the Haro Straight to the San Juan islands I plan to head tomorrow to Orcas Island to pal around with my friend… Continue reading →

I’m not dead

June 15, 2015Matt 2 Comments

I haven’t posted anything for a while, because I’ve been mostly in pain for the last two weeks so it would just be endless whining about my foot and NO-ONE wants to read that. Oh for the record, my foot… Continue reading →

Race to Alaska part II + ankle update

June 10, 2015Matt 2 Comments

The race is now on, and you can follow it on http://tracker.r2ak.com/ Phil and Team Mau got through Seymour Narrows, but apparently the wind is gusting up to 40 knots, which on a beach cat…. yikes. Here are some photos I… Continue reading →

I bust my foot

June 6, 2015Matt 2 Comments

No not fighting a kraken or surviving a knockdown in a gale, instead I was playing soccer and got in a bad tackle and ripped all the ligaments. Sigh. Aside from having a comically swollen foot, it also means that… Continue reading →

Securing the fridge

June 2, 2015Matt Leave a comment

So after that rather rough sail where the fridge/freezer decided to launch itself onto the floor and put a rather large dent in it (the floor, not the fridge), I decided that ‘balancing it on the side’ wasn’t the best… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
