Adding Cabin LEDs

January 11, 2015Matt Leave a comment

One of the things on my ‘non-urgent’ list was to replace all my lights with LEDs for two reasons 1) They draw 1/5 of the power 2) They are extremely relialbe. After doing a ton of research, I finally went… Continue reading →

First time salmon fishing

January 10, 2015Matt Leave a comment

I finished up the downrigger install – this involved installing the plug for the power, attaching a 30amp fuse and then adding a 30amp breaker into the panel to replace the 15amp existing one. Once that was all done, I… Continue reading →

Finishing off the heater

January 7, 2015Matt Leave a comment

Three things left to do Firstly, add a fan. I had two old fans that came with the boat, neither worked. So I took them apart. I discovered that one of the soldered connections had come off, so I reattached… Continue reading →

Adding a filter and fuel shutoff below the gravity tank

January 6, 2015Matt Leave a comment

Exactly what it sounds like. I ended up using the Dickinson one which was pricey but small and looks smart, and also has a shutoff switch on it. Here it is installed. I had to interrupt the copper tubing and… Continue reading →

Hooking up the heater electrics

January 5, 2015Matt 3 Comments

So now I had a chimney, a heater, and a fuel line. The only thing left was to hook up the 12v electrics. Now one of the good things about the Newport is that it technically needs no power to… Continue reading →

Hooking up the heater fuel line

January 4, 2015Matt 2 Comments

Holy CRAP this was a pain in the arse. It combined all the million-different-fittings joy of plumbing (WHICH I HATE. I HATE PLUMBING) along with mucking around with copper lines along with the added joy of that if something leaked,… Continue reading →

Red over Green vs a tricolour, and other lighting things

January 2, 2015Matt 2 Comments

As part of the coming haulout (also know as the ‘time to stick shit on the mast because I don’t want to climb the mast EVER) I started to look at redoing my lights. Neither the anchor light (on top… Continue reading →

It’s so cold!

December 30, 2014Matt 1 Comment

SO I finally got a fuel pump, that’s the good news. Meaning I have nearly all the major parts for the heater. It’s a Walbro fuel pump with an added pressure regulator.   Sadly though I haven’t done anything for… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
