February 5, 2015Matt 3 Comments

So, it was finally time to move the boat to Sidney to haul out – Westport Marina is half price until the end of February, so to haul out now would be the most cost effective thing to do, as… Continue reading →

Float switch woes

January 27, 2015Matt Leave a comment

My float switch for the ‘OH SHIT’ bilge pump had always been a bit flaky and just stopped working one day (incidentally this is why it’s worth testing every couple days) Replacing was dead easy – except when I cut… Continue reading →

January 22, 2015Matt Leave a comment

With the switch to the RS35 radio, I got rid of the only NMEA0183 device in my boat and could start to install a NMEA2000 network. WARNING: NERD SPEAK FOLLOWS NMEA0183 is a serial based communication standard that all boat… Continue reading →

Sailing on the Nancy Blackett

January 19, 2015Matt Leave a comment

My lovely boat neighbours, Matt and Jocelyn, invited me for a sail with them and two of their friends on board their boat, the Nancy Blackett, a (I think) 40 foot sloop. It was a cautious sail since a gale… Continue reading →

Ecofan

As talked about in a previous post, these heaters really benefit from using a fan to spread the heat around. My initial attempt using an ancient rule fan that I repaired I deemed was too noisy, so I ordered an… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
