Shaking off the rust. Badly.

Last weekend I decided to take the boat out for the weekend and go to Orcas, as it had been almost SIX MONTHS since I had gone anywhere, what with the painting, the battery install and the crappy weather. I… Continue reading →

Bunch of small stuff I just did OR a nice way to spend a sunny day

January 14, 2018Matt 2 Comments

So this was originally going to be about the next stage of the LifePO4 install (spoiler alert: I finished and it works) but it’s a lot of writing and I couldn’t be bothered yet. HOWEVER today was actually SUNNY (at this… Continue reading →

LiFePo4 Batteries: Part Five – Old mount was terrible, remount time!

January 11, 2018Matt 3 Comments

So as mentioned when I first figured out how to mount the batteries I wasn’t really happy with the first attempt, as basically all the batteries were kind of squeezed in with a rachet strap and weren’t very secure. GARBAGE, RIP… Continue reading →

It got cold (or, a list of boring jobs I did)

I don’t want to complain too much after last years winter (where it started raining in September and didn’t stop until May, aside to snow a bunch) and this autumn has been pretty nice – but couldn’t it wait until… Continue reading →

Lithium Batteries: Part One – LiFePO4 design

October 26, 2017Matt 14 Comments

Ok before I start I gotta give a huge NERD WARNING, as this stuff is probably going to be of not much interest to virtually anyone. Except all 3 people building a LiFePO4 on their boat. So, sorry about that.… Continue reading →

Painting update

September 28, 2017Matt 6 Comments

Nice short one here but basically I’ve put two coats on everything except the non-skid (which I am doing with Kiwi-Grip) and one lazarette lid (which has one coat on it). I’m getting there! And Gudge looks pretty spick and… Continue reading →

Northern Century II: The Race

August 23, 2017Matt 3 Comments

As mentioned in my previous post, I was taking part in a race called the Northern Century on Gudge, with my friend Emma. The race started from Anacortes Yacht Club on Friday evening at 7:30, so on Thursday we sailed… Continue reading →

Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!

The hardest parts are yet to come but after two and a half years, I'm homeward bound.
