Head Vent install

September 7, 2014Matt Leave a comment

The original vent install for the Natures Head was simply a screen laid over the hole from the old pump out hole. This was great until it rained heavily, and a ton of water went down the vent and into… Continue reading →

Learning Lessons

September 7, 2014Matt 3 Comments

One thing that has been a constant has been the amount of new things that I’ve been learning. Some I learn the hard way. Today, I decided to do some crabbing. I’d already taken out the boat once before with… Continue reading →

Installing the dodger

September 3, 2014Matt Leave a comment

One of the things the boat came with was a dodger frame (that had pulled loose), and rear frame, and a big bag of what can only be described as ‘mystery canvas’. With Winter coming, a project that rapidly increasing… Continue reading →

Next up was to install the GPS. I decided to mount it on the pedestal so went and bought a bunch of fittings. After a short while of mucking about, I managed to get it installed. I then had to… Continue reading →

The shifter on my gear pedistal is held on by a screw – this had already given way once (and was the first repair I did) and it gave way again when I was on a docking lesson – luckily… Continue reading →

Installing the head

August 31, 2014Matt 1 Comment

So, I diverted a bit from normal practice here and had long ago decided to use a composting head instead of a ‘normal’ marine head – you may remember me pulling out all the head plumbing and holding tank.  A… Continue reading →

It was time to finish off the plumbing. First, I installed the new taps in the bathroom   The old ones were pretty grotty as you can see. Again, I had a huge problem getting these things off and had… Continue reading →

The last thing to do here was change the oil, and change the 3 filters – primary filter, secondary filter and the oil filter. First was the Primary filter – this is a rancor filter and first in line in… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
