Going round Vancouver Island

July 21, 2016Matt 13 Comments

In two days(!) I leave to start a circumnavigation of Vancouver Island! This is by far the biggest sailing related feat I’ve attempted, so a lot of planning has gone into it, and Emma is coming along to make things… Continue reading →

Two years living on a boat

July 12, 2016Matt 2 Comments

When I looked back at the ‘one year living on a boat’ post I actually discovered I moved on at the start of June, not July. Oops. So I guess this is a ‘2 years and a month and a bit’… Continue reading →

Returning home and first docking mishap

July 6, 2016Matt Leave a comment

Well, first docking mishap to cause damage I should say. Ugh. So let’s get to it – after a lovely weekend at Orcas Island (where I saw several firework displays) and ate some oysters (I had one that was too… Continue reading →

Fixing engine coolant pump and an amazing days sailing

July 4, 2016Matt 6 Comments

I guess my titles are becoming more and more literal. Soon it’s gonna devolve down to ‘I did a Thing and then another Thing’. Anyway. My original plan was to head to Orcas island on Friday 1st July. This is… Continue reading →

Farewell sweet prince~

So, although I love my porta-bote when it was up and workin’, actually putting the 10′ boat together was a pain on the foredeck, especially with the solar panels there now. With this in mind, I traded my 10′ for… Continue reading →

Wednesday night racing and Swiftshore 2016!

June 1, 2016Matt 6 Comments

So I’ve been doing some racing recently, mainly as an attempt to learn more about sail trim beyond ‘the white things are up in the air and not flapping’ I started around a month ago after Phil invited me onto… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
