Moving the boat (Part 1) – Or I hate Ladner

January 5, 2014Matt 2 Comments

Or maybe not. More on that later. So the boat is in Ladner, I’m in Victoria. This obviously posed a problem, so I needed to move it over. Unfortunately, to say my small boat experience is ‘lacking’ would be a… Continue reading →

Looking at Marinas

December 30, 2013Matt Leave a comment

Yesterday, I went looking at marinas in Victoria. It seems that a lot of them have waiting lists, though I found a spot at Oak Bay marina (non-liveaboard though). My current plan is to haul the boat out of the… Continue reading →

Electronics

So one of the decisions that I would have to make is what electronics to put on the boat – not gonna lie I’m kind of a huge nerd so was looking forward to researching it. I decided to aim… Continue reading →

The Survey Part 2 – Or, I now own a boat

December 23, 2013Matt 2 Comments

So today was the second part of the survey, after the temperatures froze the lift solid (see previous entry). I got out of bed late, and was further hampered by a call from work asking me to open a firewall… Continue reading →

The Survey!

December 22, 2013Matt 1 Comment

This Friday was the boat survey! Unfortunately, the marina at which the boat was tied up at had a non-functioning boatlift, so we would have to move the boat up the river to Captain Cove. It meant hiring a captain… Continue reading →

So tomorrow the boat is being sailed to Captains Cove (doubling as a sea trial) and then being hauled out the water for the survey. I have my fingers crossed that all goes well – if it does, then my… Continue reading →

Well, this is the first post on what I hope to be a long series. After a long time thinking about it, I’ve decided to try to become a liveaboard, and live on a sailing boat. I live in a… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
