Solar Install Part 2: Installing the first 200 watts of the system

May 18, 2016Matt 4 Comments

Dumb title but didn’t know what else to call it – as it’s not the last bit of solar I’ll install. As mentioned in the previous post on this topic I’d got hold of a couple 100 watt panels and an… Continue reading →

Upgrading battery bank + mantus goodies

April 25, 2016Matt 5 Comments

As mentioned in my last post, one of the things I was doing was a cheap increase in battery bank size to tide me over to next year (and lithiums). Originally, I was going to get two 6v golf cart… Continue reading →

Solar Install Part 1: Planning

April 19, 2016Matt 8 Comments

So after spending at least a year whining that my battery bank is too small, I can’t generate power etc etc I’ve decided to FINALLY do something about it, spurred on by the discovery of $130 6V 220 AH batteries… Continue reading →

April 12, 2016Matt Leave a comment

I still hadn’t tested my autopilot out on a full blown trip, and last weekend my friend Phil (same guy who sailed to Australia, Race to Alaska on a beach cat etc etc) had just bought himself a little 24′… Continue reading →

Bleeding a Yanmar 2QM20

April 6, 2016Matt 13 Comments

This is pretty much an FYI post, as it took me a while to figure this out. This is NOT the procedure in the manual, but works a ton better! Basically there are TWO places to bleed it, labeled here.… Continue reading →

First time using (incorrectly) the spinnaker and getting the kicker working

April 4, 2016Matt 4 Comments

This weekend it was nice out, so I decided to work on the spinnaker pole. It was a second hand one and was a foot or so too long, making it tricky to handle. First I cut it down to… Continue reading →

Finishing up Autopilot install: Installing the AC12 and testing

March 28, 2016Matt 3 Comments

Last thing to do was to wire up the brains of the system, the AC12. First, I installed it on a bulkhead near the breaker panel, safe inside the (hopefully dry) cockpit. Then, I hooked up the wires temporarily to… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
