I got my PHRF rating!

March 5, 2017Matt 4 Comments

The last pre-requisite I needed to enter races was a PHRF rating – kind of like a handicapping system for boats. In theory, it means that fast boats can race against slow boats in a kind of even playing field… Continue reading →

Installing an ICOM802 SSB Part 4: Connecting the emergency DSC antenna

February 25, 2017Matt Leave a comment

So the last thing I had to do to finish off the ICOM 802 install was plug in an antenna to act as an emergency DSC antenna. ‘What – two antennas for one radio?’ I hear you cry? (although that… Continue reading →

If you had tried to access the site over the last few days you may have noticed some weird stuff happening. Like the site vanishing completely. This was due to me moving hosts (and saving around $200 a year!) and… Continue reading →

Redoing the adjustable backstay

January 21, 2017Matt 2 Comments

My boat has an adjustable backstay (a stay is one of the big steel wires that keeps the mast from falling down) and ever since I have had it, I haven’t really touched it. It’s been locked in the same… Continue reading →

Hebridean Wind Vane Construction: Part 8 (Finishing trunk and extension)

January 4, 2017Matt Leave a comment

WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?! My Hebridean Wind Vane project, last seen 9 months ago has resurfaced! Contrary to popular belief (mostly by myself) I hadn’t given up on it but the installation of the electric autopilot meant that it wasn’t as important a project as it… Continue reading →

Plumbing sucks immensely

December 24, 2016Matt 8 Comments

This was originally called ‘Plumbing Sucks’ but apparently I’ve already used that title so here is the current one. On account of it being the festive season it’s a lot less sweary than I wanted it to be originally. ANYWAY… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
