Painting update

September 28, 2017Matt 6 Comments

Nice short one here but basically I’ve put two coats on everything except the non-skid (which I am doing with Kiwi-Grip) and one lazarette lid (which has one coat on it). I’m getting there! And Gudge looks pretty spick and… Continue reading →

Stuck in prepping hell

September 17, 2017Matt 5 Comments

Or rather in prepping limbo as one of the key themes of hell according to Dante is that everyone in hell actually secretly wants to be there, while I very VERY VERY much do not want to be where I… Continue reading →

Running on the spot (and running rigging replacement part 1)

July 23, 2017Matt 2 Comments

Facebook helpfully reminded me that exactly a year ago I was leaving on my round-the-island trip, which bummed me out a bit as instead of leaving on an adventure I’ve been lying around with a heavy cold, feeling sorry for… Continue reading →

New Sails!

June 16, 2017Matt Leave a comment

So I got new sails from Precision Sails! Woooo! I ordered them last September and they arrived in March. I found I had measured the forestay incorrectly (long story, mainly due to me being an idiot) and so the 115% Genoa… Continue reading →

New(ish) Winches

June 14, 2017Matt Leave a comment

So after managing to destroy both my cabintop winches  I needed new ones. Fast. So I got the same type (I thought) off ebay. Why would I do this when I’ve complained about them incessantly? Because it was only 100 CAD… Continue reading →

The one where I try to fix stuff and make a hash of it

June 7, 2017Matt 4 Comments

I’m not sure what it is this week but everything I’ve touched has just gone to crap like some kind of rubbish King Midas. First of, I went to add in a tank selector switch. I currently have two freshwater… Continue reading →

Yet another porta-bote

May 24, 2017Matt 4 Comments

As mentioned in an older update, I’d switched the original 10ft porta-bote for an 8ft model  which I later regretted. The smaller size was great, but capacity and stability was not. I was hoping that was due to it being an… Continue reading →

Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!

The hardest parts are yet to come but after two and a half years, I'm homeward bound.
