Keeping Warm and Dry

November 11, 2014Matt 2 Comments

I’ve been away a lot the last few weeks, and so haven’t really had time to either work on the boat or update my blog. Things have calmed down a bit, so now I’m going to talk about the top… Continue reading →

Fogged in

October 13, 2014Matt Leave a comment

Woke up one morning to this     While extremely beautiful (everything is so hushed when fog covered and still) it DID starkly bring into relief the fact I still haven’t got my diesel heater installed. To buy myself some time… Continue reading →

Fixing the roller furler

October 9, 2014Matt Leave a comment

One of the things that have been jammed since I can remember is the roller furling on the foresail – it just wouldn’t turn in any direction! To fix it, first I removed the sail and disassembled the drum Next… Continue reading →

Installing the propane system

October 2, 2014Matt Leave a comment

Propane is kind of scary stuff, at least once a month someone blows themselves (and their boat) skyhigh, like this story http://threesheetsnw.com/blog/2012/02/40-foot-boat-explodes-injuries-one-in-sequim/ However, when used properly with safeguards, it’s a great fuel to cook with. Needless to say I was extremely… Continue reading →

For whom the piss jug tolls

September 23, 2014Matt 1 Comment

So I’ve written before about my Natures Head toilet – it’s a great system that separates the solids and liquids, the solids needs emptying every 2 months or so, the liquids every few days. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really paying much… Continue reading →

September 18, 2014Matt Leave a comment

One of the things that came as a surprise to me, moving onto a boat, was the amount of times I banged myself up. Apparently this is a Known Thing, and is (semi-)affectionately known as boat bites. There was a… Continue reading →

Engine bits and bobs

September 15, 2014Matt Leave a comment

Being a quiet Sunday, I decided to do some miscellaneous bits and pieces on the engine I’d been putting off. First off was to rewire the alternator. This is the original wiring   As you can see, the output from the… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
