August 27, 2022Matt 3 Comments

So this has actually been an ongoing project over the last (checks calendar* seven?! wow) months and I’ve been putting off writing about it because I wanted the first post to be the overview and I was CONSTANTLY changing my… Continue reading →

Summer updates

July 31, 2022Matt 5 Comments

It’s been a while since I did a new post – most of the reason for that is that I’ve been really busy finishing off the redo of the entire DC system, which is going to be a multi-post series… Continue reading →

Hauling out

March 27, 2022Matt 5 Comments

Hauling out is probably my least favourite part of owning a boat. It costs a lot of money, you are on a bit of a schedule to do work as every extra day costs you even more money, staying aboard… Continue reading →

Sooner’s wiring is unfortunately standard issue ‘old boat wiring’ which is to say, pretty bad (see previous blog post on the state of gudges wiring) and sorting that out would be the first priority, as ‘fire’ is one of the… Continue reading →

Moving Sooner to Victoria

January 11, 2022Matt 4 Comments

So like Gudge (and Frawg), I’d bought a boat somewhere where I didn’t live. Pender Island, in this case. Luckily, unlike 7 years ago I had the skills (and more importantly, the insurance coverage) to move the boat myself. Unluckily,… Continue reading →

I bought a new boat

January 2, 2022Matt 14 Comments

Well, the title says it all, I have a new (large, sorry Frawg) boat, say hello to Sooner everyone! Sooner is a Rafiki 37 but a bit unusual in that unlike all the other ~50 Rafikis, she was built in… Continue reading →

Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!

The hardest parts are yet to come but after two and a half years, I'm homeward bound.
