Yet another porta-bote

May 24, 2017Matt 4 Comments

As mentioned in an older update, I’d switched the original 10ft porta-bote for an 8ft model  which I later regretted. The smaller size was great, but capacity and stability was not. I was hoping that was due to it being an… Continue reading →

May 14, 2017Matt 4 Comments

The call came in that my new lifelines were ready so I stopped by to pick them up after work. On my bike. Not thinking that together with the old ones the whole package was 40lbs and around 120 feet… Continue reading →

Installing lazy jacks

May 10, 2017Matt 1 Comment

Up to now, my tactic for dousing my main sail has been to ‘open halyard, dump sail all over deck, scoop it up and tie round boom’ in a highly technical manoeuvre called ‘the burrito’.  This was often made more… Continue reading →

New anchor rode

May 7, 2017Matt 3 Comments

A while ago I bought 350 ft of new anchor rode to replace the 200 ft I already had (giving me a total of 410ft, with the 60ft chain I have). The old rode was old as hell and was… Continue reading →

Stripping and cleaning Barient 10P winches

April 10, 2017Matt Leave a comment

So the weather has upgraded from ‘god awful’ to ‘really depressing’ (another record – it rained 29 days in March. Wooooooo) and to celebrate I decided to finally clean and strip my two companionway winches. Also known as the piece… Continue reading →

This weekend I went across to Orcas Island (first time since last halloween!)  I hadn’t seen Elyses for a while and I had some stuff there to pick up. Emma also came along, after spending 7 hours to get from… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
