Hi everyone! At this point I am over a year behind, having left off just at Bahia Frailes. So here is a year, in recap. Got to La Paz, hung out with friends from Canada and new friends Raced Maquinna Point… Continue reading →

I got an article published!

May 18, 2022Matt Leave a comment

A very quick (and braggy) post – I got my first sailing article published! It’s in Good Old Boat magazine, May/June issue. There was also a nice little sketch of Sooner plus an embarrassing quote from me. And yeah, that’s… Continue reading →

Moving Sooner to Victoria

January 11, 2022Matt 4 Comments

So like Gudge (and Frawg), I’d bought a boat somewhere where I didn’t live. Pender Island, in this case. Luckily, unlike 7 years ago I had the skills (and more importantly, the insurance coverage) to move the boat myself. Unluckily,… Continue reading →

I bought a new boat

January 2, 2022Matt 14 Comments

Well, the title says it all, I have a new (large, sorry Frawg) boat, say hello to Sooner everyone! Sooner is a Rafiki 37 but a bit unusual in that unlike all the other ~50 Rafikis, she was built in… Continue reading →

Summer Update

November 26, 2021Matt 4 Comments

Well, end of summer update. Or autumn now I guess. Anyway, I’m not dead – just had very little boatwise to talk about after selling Gudge. I did go halves with Emma on a shark 24 called FRAWG, which is… Continue reading →

Domain name change complete!

May 6, 2021Matt 6 Comments

Well it was a bit longer than ‘within the week’ but I finally finished the domain name changeover. You should be seeing this now on saildivefish.ca (a studiously non-tied-to-boat-name domain) and hopefully, that is the last time ever I have… Continue reading →

Pardon my dust

April 21, 2021Matt 8 Comments

Over the next week or so, I’ll be making a few changes to this website – the most important one is moving over to www.saildivefish.ca as Life on Gudgeon is certainly not accurate anymore. After thinking on it for a… Continue reading →

Summer Update

July 10, 2020Matt 4 Comments

Well, it’s been a while since I updated this, mainly because nothing has really changed. I’m still in Ottawa, covid is still rampaging around the place, the Pacific is still closed and Gudge is still in Mexico. Ottawa is currently… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
