Maintenance

Wiring the ELCI

May 26, 2014Matt 1 Comment

My new blue seas flashy panel came with a 30amp dual breaker, which is pretty standard. I decided I wanted to have more safety than that though, so bought an ELCI. This device is like a GFCI for your whole… Continue reading →

Changing the AC Shore Power socket

May 21, 2014Matt 1 Comment

One of the things that was suggested was to change out my AC 30amp shore power socket, which had a cover with a snapped hinge and was also lookin’ pretty grubby   The cable itself was also looking pretty beat… Continue reading →

I’m done! But not without a struggle. I bought new screws, that had flatter heads, and used them as shown   Then I tried to put the cover on – still wouldn’t fit. ARGH. Part of the metal box was… Continue reading →

Changing the outlets – part 2

OH GOD. Anyway, first order of business was to add connectors onto the wires. In houses, this is done by just wrapping the wire strand around the screw. In boats, this doesn’t fly for a number of reasons. I chose… Continue reading →

Changing the outlets: Part 1 of probably loads

Today, I started seriously changing the outlets to GCFIs. Theoretically, you only need one GFCI at the start of each circuit and all the outlets downstream are covered, but I decided to change out them all – the old sockets… Continue reading →

My new smartplug socket (to replace existing, slightly dodgy existing shorepower socket), shorepower cord and Blue Seas AC/DC panel arrived today! Just waiting for the galvanic isolator and the ELCI switch and we are in business – I can’t wait… Continue reading →

Not much to say – still cleaning, now finished the whole front (inc the bedroom compartment, bathroom and closet) and middle. I’ve pulled all the wires and hoses out, and removed the batteries (see pic for empty compartment) Hopefully have… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
