August 2, 2017Matt 6 Comments

I got a call yesterday, confirming that the wait list I was on had shifted, and I had a place in the winter program at the Causeway marina, in front of the Empress Hotel (still in Victoria!) Since I decided… Continue reading →

Leaving date

July 30, 2017Matt 7 Comments

So last year I did a post about how I was hoping to leave on my round-the-world trip in September 2017, with Spring 2018 as a backup date. Obviously this is in like 2 months, so it’s no real surprise… Continue reading →

Running on the spot (and running rigging replacement part 1)

July 23, 2017Matt 2 Comments

Facebook helpfully reminded me that exactly a year ago I was leaving on my round-the-island trip, which bummed me out a bit as instead of leaving on an adventure I’ve been lying around with a heavy cold, feeling sorry for… Continue reading →

July 8, 2017Matt 7 Comments

So I hadn’t done any work on the windvane for a while, mainly because the next big thing I had to do was planing down a plank of wood to form an aerofoil. This is Really Hard and combined with… Continue reading →

Solid boom vang install

June 24, 2017Matt 5 Comments

As part of the ‘Sail Better, Idiot’ intuitive that was kicked off after being helplessly swept backward in Swiftsure I decided to install a boom vang. Basically, this is a block and tackle at the base of the mast that… Continue reading →

New Sails!

June 16, 2017Matt Leave a comment

So I got new sails from Precision Sails! Woooo! I ordered them last September and they arrived in March. I found I had measured the forestay incorrectly (long story, mainly due to me being an idiot) and so the 115% Genoa… Continue reading →

The one where I try to fix stuff and make a hash of it

June 7, 2017Matt 4 Comments

I’m not sure what it is this week but everything I’ve touched has just gone to crap like some kind of rubbish King Midas. First of, I went to add in a tank selector switch. I currently have two freshwater… Continue reading →

Video walkthrough

June 1, 2017Matt 10 Comments

So I’ve been meaning to make a video for ages but was too lazy. However I was interviewed by a guy doing a series on people living in small spaces so now I don’t have to! Watch me talk way… Continue reading →

Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!

The hardest parts are yet to come but after two and a half years, I'm homeward bound.
