Weekend sailing

March 8, 2015Matt Leave a comment

So at some point sailing I’m sure will become so ho-hum that I won’t excitedly blog about it, but today is not that day. The weather was GORGEOUS, and I had a friend from Vancouver staying with me for the… Continue reading →

SPRING IS COMING

March 6, 2015Matt Leave a comment

…. AND I CAN’T WAIT. The sun has been out constantly for the last week or so, and the temperature has stuck around 11c, and it almost feels warm in the sun! In a fit of hubris, I’ve taken down… Continue reading →

The to-do list

March 4, 2015Matt 4 Comments

Ripping off shamelessly an idea I saw on another liveaboard’s blog, Legally Ginger,  I’ve decided to add a to-do list onto the website, found on the main menu or here. This way I can gaze at it in abject panic everyday… Continue reading →

March 3, 2015Matt 3 Comments

So after the entire driveshaft fiasco, I am back at Fisherman’s Wharf and still haven’t taken down the mast. To do that I have to go to Sooke (apparently home of the only damn working mast tower in the entire south… Continue reading →

Fixing foresail

March 1, 2015Matt Leave a comment

So something I noticed yesterday is that the foresail wasn’t fully raised, causing a problem with it catching on things and having a bag in it, and just generally being a shitty shape. You can see this in the below… Continue reading →

Back home!

February 26, 2015Matt 5 Comments

Not much to say, but this morning Billy came up, and we moved the boat back to her and my home in Fisherman’s Wharf.   Finally! It’s been a real shitty month (actually, a shitty year) but I instantly started… Continue reading →

Well, I’m back in the water….

February 25, 2015Matt Leave a comment

…. and that’s the good news. The bad news is I got the bill for the yard work in, and it was 3x as much as I thought and 2x as much as my ‘worst case’ estimate. It was over… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
