One year living on a boat

May 31, 2015Matt 8 Comments

First up, this is an extremely long and rambling post, with far more than it’s fair share of navel-gazing. You’ve been warned. I’d missed talking about the one year anniversary of owning the boat back in December, due to being… Continue reading →

More running rigging work

May 25, 2015Matt 4 Comments

After yesterdays escapade, where I got to see what it would look like if the inside of my cabin went through a tumble drier, today I decided to try to hook up some kind of reefing system. I ended up… Continue reading →

May 25, 2015Matt Leave a comment

Last Saturday will go down in history. Children will cheer, church bells will ring, and it will forever be known as The Day I Finished The Mast Wiring. I had finished almost everything a month or so ago, but to… Continue reading →

One of those days

May 7, 2015Matt 7 Comments

Ever have one of those days where everything you try to do doesn’t work? Yeah. First I started to rebed 2 more of my chainplates. Got most of the way through, and then ran out of resin. Ugh. So then… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
