November 7, 2016Matt 4 Comments

I’ve been crazy excited about my SSB since I picked it up and WON’T SHUT UP about it as anyone I know can attest. But I had yet to install it. So, the first part of installing the SSB was… Continue reading →

Number Crunching

October 20, 2016Matt 9 Comments

So yesterday I started crunching numbers to figure out if I was going to be able to meet my target leave date of next September. I tried to be conservative and do the ‘worst case’ scenarios for everything, and I’m… Continue reading →

Four cheap things that make being a liveaboard a ton easier

October 6, 2016Matt 2 Comments

These are the top four (4) things that pretty much changed my life… *dramatic pause* 1) This plastic bag. That may sound dumb at first but WAIT! At dock, using the standard spring line config (a line that runs from… Continue reading →

My birthday was this weekend as I turned the ripe old age of 34. I celebrated by trying to play a game of football, but spraining my ankle in the warm up, not even getting to play in the game.… Continue reading →

Since returning from the Vancouver Island trip, I’ve been pretty low energy, concentrating on keeping my expenses down (I’ve ditched the car! RIP Lola, you will be remembered), eating healthily and resisting the temptation just to eat ice cream and… Continue reading →

Conclusions and next steps

September 2, 2016Matt 4 Comments

After having had a week or so to mull over the trip, I’ve drawn the following conclusions: I need to get better at provisioning. Originally Emma and I were going to share the duty but after a short chat she… Continue reading →

Panama Canal Part 2 Panama Canal Part 2
A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama A couple of weeks ago I made it through the Panama Canal, which was a pretty crazy 17 hour day. There are 6 locks in total, divided into 3 groups - 3 locks are at the start, then you end up driving through a manmade channel for miles, before emerging into a manmade lake.

The whole day was so full of huge ships and challenging situations but the feeling of emerging into a NEW OCEAN on the other side is pretty unbelievable

Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific f Made to Panama City, my last stop in the Pacific for quite some time. Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!
