Leaving date

July 30, 2017Matt 7 Comments

So last year I did a post about how I was hoping to leave on my round-the-world trip in September 2017, with Spring 2018 as a backup date. Obviously this is in like 2 months, so it’s no real surprise… Continue reading →

Swiftsure 2017 (Or a series of questionable decisions)

May 29, 2017Matt 7 Comments

So, Swiftsure 2017 – the first race I’ve taken Gudge in! We were in the 80 nautical mile race. I got a big shipment of the rest of the safety stuff and spraypainted the banners  at emma’s parents house (bribed with… Continue reading →

May 14, 2017Matt 4 Comments

The call came in that my new lifelines were ready so I stopped by to pick them up after work. On my bike. Not thinking that together with the old ones the whole package was 40lbs and around 120 feet… Continue reading →

October 31, 2016Matt Leave a comment

This weekend I went on a trip to Orcas for two reasons: Firstly to go to a ghost prom (this would incidentally be the first prom i’ve ever been to, alive or dead) and second of all to pick up… Continue reading →

End of the summer

September 16, 2016Matt 4 Comments

Since returning from the Vancouver Island trip, I’ve been pretty low energy, concentrating on keeping my expenses down (I’ve ditched the car! RIP Lola, you will be remembered), eating healthily and resisting the temptation just to eat ice cream and… Continue reading →

Conclusions and next steps

September 2, 2016Matt 4 Comments

After having had a week or so to mull over the trip, I’ve drawn the following conclusions: I need to get better at provisioning. Originally Emma and I were going to share the duty but after a short chat she… Continue reading →

Last 100 miles were upwind against heavy current but it was ok, even the fearsome Punta Mala was tame. By far the scariest bit was threading my way through the shipping anchorage outside the canal, the traffic was very active and a couple of times I had to get out the way sharpish

Next, the canal!

The hardest parts are yet to come but after two and a half years, I'm homeward bound.
